CecoFill
Ultraviolet barrier and high build primer/filler

CecoFill is a water base latex material mixed with flumed carbon. This combination not only makes a high build primer that remains extremely flexible, but also provides an excellent ultraviolet barrier for your fabric or composite surface.

CecoFill is a perfect primer/filler over polyester fabric, glass cloth, gel coat, composite materials, etc. It has excellent adhesion to these surfaces and superior high build properties to fill in small imperfections or the weave of a fabric. It sands easily to an ultra smooth finish. Just perfect for Stewart Systems Waterborne Two-Part Polyurethane Topcoats.

Probably the most important reason for using CecoFill is that it is a proven ultraviolet barrier for those sun sensitive products used for aircraft construction. As most of you may or may not know, there are two common conditions that will destroy most synthetic fibers. One being excessive heat above 400°F, the other being ultraviolet rays (sunlight). The flumed carbon in CecoFill is a perfect and natural way to protect your project from harmful UV Rays and like all our products it is safe to use, pleasant to smell and you clean-up with water.

CECOFILL APPLICATION

CecoFill, when applied properly with two brush coats and with the minimum of 4 to 6 light spray coats, fills the weave, provides excellent ultraviolet light protection and gives an excellent base for finish color coats.

If the fabric covered surfaces appear soiled or stained, they should be vacuumed to remove dust and wiped using a cloth dampened with either lacquer thinner or diluted Stewart Systems Heavy Duty Cleaner. Be sure to remove any cleaner residue with clean water.

Before application, make certain that CecoFill has been thoroughly mixed. CecoFill has a very high solids content which may settle out in storage. Check by placing a stir stick into the container and stir. If the solids are very firm mix thoroughly using a drill and paint mixing device (you can obtain a mixing device at your local hardware store or through Stewart Systems). You may also roll the CecoFill container on a rock tumbler or similar device. Do not shake or “whip” CecoFill as it will foam and bubble. If your mixing method has caused the CecoFill to foam or bubble, allow it to rest until all bubbles have dissipated (up to 12 hours) After mixing, strain CecoFill through a medium paint filter.

CecoFill comes ready to apply, do not thin. For the first two coats, use a foam brush, applying the second coat 90 degrees to the first coat.  Lightly sand when dry and then apply the spray coats. Adjust the paint gun using only enough air pressure to siphon the material out of the pot. Low air pressure at the spray gun will apply a smoother surface with less over spray. A good test is to spray this light fog coat on white butcher paper, your spray pattern should cover 30 to 40% of the target surface. NOTE: We recommend at least a 1.5mm fluid tip for spraying CecoFill.

When the paint gun has been properly adjusted, apply 4 light coats, each 90° to the previous coat. Each coat should be very dry looking when applied to the surface.

TIP: Overlap your spray patterns at surface tape edges where more fill is desired.

Under the right conditions CecoFill should be ready to sand in 1 hour. Because temperature and humidity can greatly affect drying time use the following test to determine when you are ready to sand: Choose a small area and sand lightly with 320 grit open coat sand paper, you should create sanding dust, if the material “rolls up” under the sandpaper CecoFill is not ready to sand. CecoFill should be sanded when thoroughly dry with 320  grit open coat sandpaper (wet cut sandpaper is not recommended). After the first sanding spray 2 to 4 additional light coats, as described before, 90° to the previous coat. Sand again with 220 to 280 grit dry. The final CecoFill coat is sanded with 220-280 dry cut paper followed up with 320 - 400 grit or dry cut paper. Remember, you only need enough CecoFill to block UV rays and to prepare your surface for topcoat.

NOTE: After CecoFill has been applied and sanded, the topcoat should be applied within 10 days. If left more than 10 days before top coating CecoFill must be lightly scuffed with an abrasive pad and cleaned.

CECOFILL CLEAN-UP

Clean equipment promptly with water. If CecoFill has dried in the equipment use lacquer thinner for removal.
